The education system of India is blamed every now and then for being too theoretical, but not practical and skill based. Students study to score marks, not to gain knowledge. This
so-called modern education system was introduced by the colonial masters to create servants who could serve but not lead, and we still have the same education system. Rabindra Nath Tagore had written many articles offering suggestions to change the education system of India. But still success is as elusive as ever.

Currently education system in India is calculated as a market. According to available reports at present around 1.5 million schools with more than 260 million students enrolled and around 751 universities and 35600 colleges. The education market in India is estimated at 180 billion US Dollar currently. The tertiary Student population is increased from 5.7 million in 1996 to 37.4 million at present.

Major issues of Indian education system is huge commercialism, absence of sufficient assets, costly higher education, neglect of Indian languages, no practical knowledge, the problem of brain drain, cast reservation and paid seat, mass illiteracy and wastage of resources.

The biggest problem facing education today is the lack of innovation and mobility in higher education. Because of a number of private and public factors, colleges and universities have turned into massive private business hub with multi million dollar departments and endowments. The current education system can be improved by fixing more accountability.

Adopting new education technique such as e learning and m learning will lead to a growth of distance education in India. As per IBEF, the Indian education system will become strong enough to make India one of the top five countries for research output by 2030.

In conclusion the Indian education system must change for the better. Counting education as a profitable business should be stopped which is in adverse to right to education for all. Equal opportunities must be given to students to shine better in future. We also need to let go of the old and traditional ways and enhance the teaching standards so our youth can get create a better world.
